How to Fix a Broken WordPress Website

WordPress powers a huge share of business websites, largely because it's flexible and easy to get started with. That same flexibility — thousands of themes and plugins built by different developers — is also why things break.

The white screen of death

This is one of the most alarming issues to run into: your site simply shows a blank white page, with no error message. It's almost always caused by a PHP error, often triggered by a plugin or theme update that isn't compatible with your current setup. The fix involves checking error logs, and selectively deactivating plugins to isolate the cause.

Plugin conflicts after updates

WordPress plugins are built independently, and while most play well together, updates occasionally introduce conflicts — especially between page builders, caching plugins and security plugins. Symptoms range from broken layouts to non-functioning forms.

Elementor or page builder layout issues

Page builders like Elementor make design accessible, but they also generate a lot of underlying code. Layout issues after an update, or when viewing on certain devices, are common — usually resolved by regenerating CSS files or adjusting specific widget settings.

Slow wp-admin and frontend performance

A bloated database, too many active plugins, or an underpowered hosting plan can make both the admin dashboard and the public-facing site sluggish over time. Regular database cleanup and a performance review usually resolve this.

Security warnings and suspected malware

If your browser or Google Search Console flags your site as unsafe, it typically means malicious code has been injected — often through an outdated plugin with a known vulnerability. This needs to be cleaned properly, not just have the visible symptoms removed, or the issue will return.

When to get help

Many of these issues can be resolved with some technical patience, but a wrong move — like editing the wrong file or deleting the wrong database table — can make things worse. If you're not confident diagnosing the root cause, it's worth having someone experienced take a direct look before more damage happens.
